Siminalayi Fubara, the suspended governor of Rivers State, has extended congratulations to Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, on receiving an honorary doctorate from the University of Port Harcourt.

Wike was conferred with the honorary Doctor of Science degree during the university’s 50th anniversary and 35th convocation ceremony, held in Port Harcourt on Saturday, July 26.

In a congratulatory message, Fubara described the award as “well-deserved,” pointing to Wike’s record as a two-term governor of Rivers State and his current role in the federal cabinet.

“This distinguished recognition is not only a celebration of your illustrious accomplishments, but a testament to your contributions to education, governance, and the betterment of society,” Fubara said.

He added that Wike’s impact has been far-reaching and has helped restore public trust in leadership. “It is only fitting that your alma mater honours you for your outstanding dedication and the strategic role you continue to play in shaping Nigeria’s future,” he said.

On June 26, both Wike and Fubara stated their commitment to working together for the peace and stability of Rivers State following a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja, which also included members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Earlier, on March 18, Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State due to the escalating political crisis between Wike and Fubara. As part of the emergency measures, both the governor and the Rivers assembly were suspended for an initial period of six months. The president also appointed Ibok-Ete Ibas, a retired vice admiral, as the sole administrator of the state.
