The African Democratic Congress, ADC, in Lagos State has responded to public debate over the ethnic composition of its local government chairpersons, insisting that the party remains inclusive and broadly representative.

The controversy followed a social media post by a party chieftain and former Lagos governorship candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, who shared a flyer on X listing the names and contact details of ADC local government chairpersons across the state.

The post sparked reactions online, with some commentators claiming that most of the officials hail from the South-West.

Addressing journalists in Lagos on Tuesday, the state chairman of the ADC, George Ashiru, rejected suggestions that the party’s leadership is skewed toward any single ethnic group.

He said the ADC is built as a coalition that embraces Nigerians from diverse ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds.

Ashiru explained that the party’s leadership structure in Lagos mirrors the state’s heterogeneous population and aligns with the ADC’s core values of inclusiveness and fairness.

“ADC represents Nigeria in its diversity, and every Nigerian has a place in the party,” he said in a statement issued by the Lagos ADC spokesperson, Eyiyemi Rogbinyin.

“Our membership cuts across ethnic, cultural and religious lines, and this is a deliberate expression of who we are and what we stand for.

“The ADC is open to all, regardless of tribe or faith. What binds us together is our collective commitment to justice, equity and responsible governance.”

He urged members of the public to ignore misleading narratives circulating on social media and to rely on verified information from the party’s official communication channels.
