The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a stern warning to members eyeing defection, declaring it will soon take decisive steps against those working to undermine the party from within.

Speaking after a meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) in Abuja on Wednesday, July 2, Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum underscored the PDP’s unity and resilience as it gears up for the 2027 general elections.

“If you are a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, we are drawing a line for those who go out to demarket the party. We are watching, and we will take appropriate action at the right time,” Damagum cautioned.

Flanked by other NWC members, he dismissed concerns over internal rifts, insisting the party remains strong despite challenges. He urged members to stay loyal and resist being swayed by external forces.

Damagum also took aim at the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing it of using intimidation and inducements to lure PDP members. He warned that such tactics would not determine the outcome of future elections.

“To the APC, I send a clear message: you may continue to harass and attempt to lure our members, but the 2027 election will be decided by the Nigerian people, not by your manoeuvres,” he said.

He criticized the APC-led government for failing to tackle pressing national issues like hunger, insecurity, and the arbitrary treatment of citizens. “It’s time for you to reflect and correct your ways. The issues of hunger, insecurity, and the arbitrary treatment of Nigerians are overwhelming and unacceptable,” Damagum added.

Reaffirming the PDP’s commitment to democratic values, he described the party as people-focused, inclusive, and uniquely structured to withstand turbulent times.

“We are in a democracy, and the voices of the people must be heard. We are not a conquered people. We are law-abiding citizens who deserve to be listened to,” he said.

Damagum called on members to act as true ambassadors of the PDP and reflect on its contributions to Nigeria’s development. While acknowledging that some might be tempted to defect, he expressed confidence they would eventually return.

“There is no party as accommodating as ours. But if they choose to go, I wish them well, though I believe they’ll find their way back,” he said.

The PDP’s next National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting is set for July 23–25, where strategies for 2027 are expected to take center stage.
