The West African Examinations Council, WAEC, has released its West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE, result for private candidates.
The WASSCE for private candidates was conducted between 27 October and 20 December, 2023.
A total of 80,904 candidates sat the examination, out of which 35,830 candidates representing 44.29% obtained credits and above in at least five mandatory subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
WAEC’s Acting Head of Public Affairs Department, Moyosore Adesina, said a total of 78,419 candidates, representing 96.93 per cent “have their results fully processed and released, while 2,485 candidates, representing 3.07 per cent have a few of their subjects still being processed due to some errors traceable to them.”
According to the examination body, a total of 85,600 candidates registered for the examination but 80,904 sat for the examinations in 568 centres across the country.
The statement reads: “Efforts are being made to speedily complete the processing to enable all the affected candidates to get their results fully processed and released soon.
“The candidates in WASSCE for Private Candidates, though can register for eight or nine subjects, are not compelled to take all. They are free to sit, even one subject, depending on the deficiency they want to remedy.
“For them, therefore, the examination is only a remedial one – a remedy for an existing deficiency. From the above, it will not be true or fair to say that the performance in this examination has dwindled.”
Out of the figure that sat for the examination, WAEC noted that only a total of 35,830 candidates, representing 44.29 per cent obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
The examination body said out of the 35,830 candidates who secured credits in five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, a total of 17,631, representing 49.21 per cent were male candidates, while 18,199, representing 50.79 per cent were female candidates.
WAEC also gives the figure of candidates who secured credits in five subjects with or without English Language and, or Mathematics to be 46,267, representing 57.19 per cent.
The Head of National Office, WAEC Nigeria, Dr Amos Dangut, disclosed that the results of all the 211 candidates with varying degrees of special needs including 33 visually impaired, 21 hearing impaired and 30 albinos among others, who sat the exam nationwide had been fully processed and released with that of others.
While the WAEC boss asked candidates to start checking their results on the council’s website given as www.waecdirect.org, he noted that candidates can also start to apply for printing of hard copies of their certificates online through the WAEC Certificate Request Portal (e-Certman) website, given as https://certrequest.waec.ng/
He said a total of 4,162 examiners participated in the coordination and marking of the exam scripts at seven traditional and one-e marking venues nationwide.
