With a career stretching over six decades, Dr. Oyewo was widely recognized as a pillar of Yoruba theatre and a major force in the evolution of Nollywood. Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, his journey in the performing arts began in 1964 when he joined the renowned Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group.

He achieved widespread critical acclaim for his powerful portrayal of Odewale in Ola Rotimi’s classic play, The Gods Are Not to Blame. Over the years, Oyewo became a household name across Nigeria, starring in iconic cinematic productions and television series such as Saworoide, Sango, Koseegbe, and Super Story.

Beyond his achievements on screen and stage, Dr. Oyewo made profound contributions to higher education. He earned a doctorate in Drama from the University of Ibadan and went on to lecture at several prestigious institutions, including Obafemi Awolowo University, Redeemer’s University, and Elizade University. Most recently, he served as the Head of the Theatre and Media Department at Ekiti State University, mentoring generations of Nigerian actors, playwrights, and researchers.

Earlier this year, Dr. Oyewo celebrated his milestone 80th birthday, drawing national tributes including commendations from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who praised him as a national treasure and an exceptional ambassador of Nigerian storytelling.

Tributes from colleagues, former students, and fans have continued to flood in, honoring a lifetime dedicated to the preservation of Yoruba culture and artistic excellence. The Oyewo family is expected to announce funeral arrangements in the coming days.
