A 400-level student at Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, has been taken into police custody following allegations of assault, criminal threats, and attempting to force a fellow student into a cult.
The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Adejo Ojonimi, a student of the Department of Economics, was apprehended on June 19, 2026. His arrest followed a formal complaint filed by a student from the Department of Food Science and Technology.
According to reports, the complainant alleged that Ojonimi repeatedly pressured him to join the Black Axe Confraternity.
The victim claimed that his refusal to participate in the initiation led to physical assault, resulting in visible injuries and persistent threats against his life. The student reportedly went into hiding for several days before alerting the university’s security unit.
University security officials confirmed that a search of the suspect’s mobile device revealed evidence linking him to the alleged confraternity, including incriminating communication with other suspected members.
Ojonimi has since been handed over to external security agencies for further investigation and potential prosecution.
In a statement regarding the incident, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Salisu Ogbo Usman, commended the security team for their swift response.
He reaffirmed the institution’s zero-tolerance policy toward cultism and criminal behavior, warning that any student found engaging in such activities would face severe consequences.
“Let this serve as a strong warning to students and anyone involved in cult-related activities: steer clear of Prince Abubakar Audu University,” the Vice-Chancellor stated.
He further urged the campus community to remain vigilant, particularly as second-semester examinations begin, and to report any suspicious activities to the administration.
