The United States Embassy in Abuja on Wednesday cancelled all visa appointments scheduled for today, warning of a “high potential for protests” in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran.

In a security alert issued early Wednesday, the Embassy advised U.S. citizens in Abuja to remain indoors and avoid public gatherings, citing concerns that demonstrations could turn violent.

“Due to the potential for protests in Abuja, the U.S. Embassy has cancelled all visa appointments on Wednesday, March 4, 2026,” the mission said in a statement. “Applicants will be contacted with information on how to reschedule.”

The Embassy noted that previous protests by some groups had resulted in clashes with Nigerian security forces, heightening fears of possible unrest.

“The Embassy strongly recommends that all U.S. citizens in Abuja remain in their residences on Wednesday, March 4,” the alert stated.

The diplomatic mission urged American citizens to avoid protest areas, stay away from crowds, monitor local media for updates, and exercise heightened vigilance in public spaces such as shopping centres, cinemas, and places of worship.

Citizens were further advised to keep mobile phones charged, carry proper identification, vary travel routes, and familiarize themselves with emergency exits when entering buildings.

Despite the cancellation of visa appointments in Abuja, the Embassy clarified that its Consular Section and that of the United States Consulate General Lagos remain open.

For emergency assistance, U.S. nationals were directed to contact the Embassy through its designated phone lines or visit its official website for updates.

The Embassy also encouraged Americans to enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive timely security notifications.

The latest advisory comes amid escalating global tensions surrounding the Iran crisis, with diplomatic missions in several countries tightening security protocols.
