Troops of Operation ENDURING PEACE, OPEP, have intercepted a consignment of illicit arms in Zak Village, Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State, neutralising one suspect and recovering two AK-47 rifles.
In a statement on Saturday, the Army said the incident occurred on Friday, August 29, 2026, during a stop-and-search operation.
According to the statement, troops flagged down a green Volkswagen Golf for routine inspection. A search revealed a specially fabricated compartment concealed in the dashboard.
When ordered to open the compartment, the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled into a nearby bush. He was pursued and apprehended by troops.
The statement said while being restrained, the suspect attempted to disarm a soldier and was neutralised in the process.
A further search of the compartment led to the recovery of two AK-47 rifles, one magazine, two wooden rifle butts, nine magazine pouches, two camel bags, six jungle hats, one mobile phone and one ATM card.
The Army said the seizure underscores ongoing efforts to disrupt the movement and proliferation of illicit arms and deny criminal elements access to weapons.
It added that the Nigerian Army, in collaboration with other security agencies, remains committed to securing critical routes and communities across the country through robust stop-and-search operations and intelligence-driven interventions.
Members of the public were urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements to security agencies.
