Family members, friends, and business associates gathered on Friday to honor the memory of late former Access Bank Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Herbert Wigwe, on what would have been his 60th birthday.
Dr. Wigwe died on February 9, 2024. Speakers at the event remembered him for his transformative impact on Africa’s financial sector and his contributions to education, healthcare, and youth empowerment.
As former Co-CEO of Access Bank and CEO of Access Holdings, Wigwe led the bank’s expansion from a local lender into a multinational financial services group. He also served as Chairman of the Bankers’ Committee, working with government and regulators to address economic challenges and drive national development.
His philanthropic work was driven through The HOW Foundation, founded in 2016. The initiative focused on educational support for underserved communities, including projects in Makoko and for Almajiri children. It also funded specialist medical training and adopted 25 primary healthcare centers in Rivers State.
Wigwe’s commitment to social development extended to Wigwe University, as well as youth leadership programs such as the Fearless Leadership Series and the Wigwe Venture Lab, both aimed at preparing the next generation of African leaders.
Colleagues said that while his life was cut short, the institutions and programs he established continue to advance his vision for the continent.
