Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto state has reiterated his oft-repeated call for a piece of legislation that would provide Constitutional roles for monarchs in the country.
He made the call at Uyo, Akwa Ibom state on Saturday when he commisioned the official residence of the Chairman, Akwa Ibom State Council of Chiefs, which comprise of two blocks of a five bedroom residence and and a 4-bedroom guests chalet.
Narrating that the issue of finding a role for the monarchs was one of the submissions Sokoto State government made recently to the Senate Committee on Constitutional Amendment, which sat for two days in the state, the governor posited that it is necessary to include the traditional rulers in critical affairs of governance, such as making them part of States’ Security Council.
According to him, a situation where stakeholders are made to run from pillar to post when there are security breaches does not augur well for the country, especially when the wisdom and administrative prowess of the traditional system can be tapped into and utilized.
He added that the need to involve the monarchs in the affairs of state cannot be over-emphasized and is long overdue, recalling with nostalgia the crucial roles they played in the stability and development of the country even when colonialism was in vogue.
Gov. Tambuwal appealed to the National Assembly to work on the bill for inclusion of monarchs in the country in the Constitution.
