The management of Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, Ogun State, on Thursday, suspended ongoing examinations in the institution.

This followed the killing of a final year student of History and Diplomatic Studies, Ayinla Fabiyi, by some suspected cultists on Wednesday.

Commotion broke out at the campus on Wednesday when men dressed in white shirts invaded the institution’s ETF exam hall during a session at noon.

The armed men were said to have dragged out Fabiyi, the general governor for TASUED’s College of Humanities, beat him with stones, stabbed him, and left him unconscious in the bush.

A video surfaced showing colleagues of the now-deceased final-year student watching in shock from a distance as the assault unfolded.

The Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mrs Odubela Ayotunde in a statement said that the university condemned this grievous and unthinkable act and commiserated with the parents and family of Fabiyi over the unfortunate incident.

Odubela, according to the statement, said the management of the university received reports of how Fabiyi was attacked at the back of the CENVOS Building of the university on Wednesday by some yet-to-be-identified persons believed to be secret cult members.

The PRO said the examination just ended with 400 level students celebrating the usual “logging out” in front of the lecture theatre when some unidentified persons carried the said victim, identified as Fabiyi, and was eventually attacked

Odubela said that Fabiyi’s colleagues assumed that the said persons were celebrating with him as it was also his birthday, however, suspicion arose when he later attempted to resist being carried away.

“Thus, they started dragging him towards the university CENVOS building. The security personnel on the ground immediately alerted the security unit, who responded immediately.

“On sighting the security operatives, the assailants took to their heels and escaped through the bush at the back of CENVOS. The victim was rescued alive, severely injured and bleeding profusely.

“He was moved to the University Health Centre, where he was referred to the General Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, for further treatment.

“At the General Hospital, the victim was thereafter referred to the Backock University Teaching Hospital due to the severity of the injuries he sustained on the head,” the statement read.

She said Fabiyi, however, reportedly died while being moved to Babcock for further treatment.

Odubela said that it was also not true that Fabiyi was abducted from the examination hall as he was not writing the ongoing 300-level History 329 (Modern European Political Thoughts) when he was attacked.

“Examinations for Thursday, 4th, and Friday, 5th July 2024, have been suspended until further notice.
