Contrary to the claim of Headquarters Guards Brigade that Mr. Abdulsamad Jamiu, a serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member was killed during a shootout with fleeing robbers in the early hours of 25 April 2026 at Shagari Estate, Dei-Dei, Abuja, the sister of the deceased has dismissed the claim as false.
Sharing her account of what happened in a video, she alleged that soldiers entered their compound by climbing over the fence while chasing suspected thieves. According to her, they went straight into her brother’s room and sh*t him twice without any provocation.
She further claimed that after the incident, the soldiers cleaned up the bl**dstains in the house and later described the shooting as a “mistake.”
According to her, their parents travelled and the deceased had his room downstairs while she and others slept upstairs.
On getting downstairs and seeing soldiers flashing torchlight all over amid smell of gunshot, she asked them ‘Where is my brother’, a question the soldiers ignored while urging her not to shout or wake the neighbourhood.
They took her outside the house and prevented her from going inside. She said at a time, she had to brave her way inside and straight to his brother’s room where he lay in a pool of blood with part of his brain spilled on one corner of the floor separated from his head.
She said there were other gunshot marks on the door and blood stains on the walls and on the floor of their house.
She said attempt by her to call their father was initially resisted by the soldiers until one of them showed empathy and allowed her to make the call to her daddy.
She said the call to her father was useful because their dad had to call neighbours who called the police and raise alarm that woke the neighborhood.
When the police arrived at the scene, she said the soldiers took the police away from the crowd to brief them. “I don’t know why they had to isolate the police from the rest of us and what they told the police,” she said as she narrated the gory tale under obvious pain and fright.
The Guards Brigade had said in an earlier statement that “the unfortunate incident occurred when troops of the Guards Brigade Quick Response Group, on routine night patrol, responded to a distress call following an armed robbery attack in the area. Upon arrival, the troops came under gunfire from the fleeing armed robbers, resulting in a brief but intense exchange.
“In the course of the engagement, Mr. Jamiu was caught in the crossfire. Despite efforts by troops to secure the area and preserve lives, he sadly succumbed to his injuries. This heartbreaking loss has cast a deep shadow over all personnel of the Guards Brigade.”
