World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director-General, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has met with Vice President Kashim Shettima on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi, where both discussed global trade and Nigeria’s role in the multilateral system.
Okonjo-Iweala disclosed the meeting in a post on X, thanking Shettima and the Nigerian delegation, including Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, for a “very good meeting.”
“Mr. Vice President reconfirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the Multilateral Trading System at its core,” she said.
Shettima, who is representing President Bola Tinubu at the summit holding from September 12 to 13, 2026, reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for the WTO.
“I believe the world is greater than one nation. We will continue to support the WTO in championing the cause of multilateralism. We are essentially one human family and interconnected,” he said.
The Vice President also spoke on migration, noting that nations benefit from skills and investments brought by people across borders. He cited the Nigerian diaspora as an example.
Nigeria became a BRICS partner country in January 2025. The government says the partnership will complement, not replace, its engagement with the WTO and other multilateral institutions.
