The Senate on Thursday passed the Nigerian Employees’ Compensation Trust Fund Agency Establishment Bill, 2026, and Federal Polytechnics Act Amendment Bill, 2026, following further legislative scrutiny and amendments.
The bills were recommitted to Committee of the Whole for additional consideration before lawmakers examined and approved their provisions clause by clause.
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, who moved motion for recommittal, said certain provisions of bills required further review to ensure administrative clarity and establish comprehensive legal framework.
He urged Senate to rescind its earlier decisions on bills and recommit them to Committee of the Whole for further consideration and passage.
Seconding motion, Senator Kamorudeen Oyewumi, representing Osun West Senatorial District, said exercise would eliminate ambiguities and align bills with existing laws establishing similar institutions.
The Senate subsequently considered bills clause by clause and approved their provisions.
Explaining purpose of Nigerian Employees’ Compensation Trust Fund Agency Establishment Bill, Bamidele said proposed legislation sought to repeal Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, NSITF, Act and Employees’ Compensation Act and replace them with new framework.
According to him, bill provides for compensation in cases of death, injury, disease or disability arising out of, or in course of, employment.
Proposed legislation also addresses related matters concerning employees’ compensation and administration of new framework.
Passage of two bills followed Senate’s decision to review their provisions to improve clarity and ensure that legislation aligns with relevant legal and administrative requirements.
