The Nigerian Senate has suspended its ongoing legislative recess, summoning lawmakers back to the capital for an emergency plenary session to tackle the country’s worsening security situation.

An official notice issued by the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, on the directive of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, instructed all senators to reconvene at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja on Tuesday, June 23. The directive notes that the emergency session is essential to address matters of urgent national importance, focusing heavily on national security and other pressing institutional concerns.

The sudden recall represents a significant shift from the federal legislature’s original schedule. Both chambers had adjourned just last week for a seasonal break to mark Democracy Day and conduct local constituency outreach, with a formal resumption originally slated for July 7.

The political pressure to act has intensified following recent public declarations by the executive and ongoing debates over national security reforms. In a recent national address, President Bola Tinubu issued a stern warning to bandits, kidnappers, and terror financiers, stating that the government would show no mercy to those destabilizing the country. While the presidency highlighted that military operations neutralized over 13,000 insurgents in the past year, it acknowledged that high-profile abductions of schoolchildren remain critical challenges.

In response to the persistent crisis, the National Assembly has recently fast-tracked proposals to alter Nigeria’s security architecture. Lawmakers have pushed a bill through its second reading to amend the 1999 Constitution to permit the creation of state police. The proposed legislation seeks to move policing from the Exclusive Legislative List to the Concurrent Legislative List, giving state governments the authority to establish and manage their own decentralized law enforcement formations.

The upcoming June 23 emergency session will serve as a platform for senators to debate these constitutional adjustments and consider further immediate interventions to combat banditry and terrorism.
