A Russian airstrike on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv has claimed the life of 23-year-old Nigerian medical graduate Nnani Adaobi Marian, just days before she was due to officially receive her degree from Kharkiv National Medical University.

Marian had completed her final medical studies and was on her way to a graduation photoshoot with her friend, Fatima Huseynova, when Russian forces launched aerial bomb attacks on Kharkiv’s Kholodnohirskyi district on June 29

The bombardment was part of a wider wave of assaults across the Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kharkiv regions that left at least 14 people dead and 98 others injured.

While her friend Fatima died instantly at the scene of the explosion, Marian sustained catastrophic, life-threatening injuries and was rushed to the hospital.

In an official statement, Kharkiv National Medical University revealed that medical teams in both Ukraine and Germany engaged in a desperate, cross-border battle to keep the Nigerian student alive, but she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.

“As a result of enemy shelling, Nnani Adaobi Marian was seriously injured,” the university stated. “Doctors fought for her life until the last moment: first in Kharkiv, and later in Germany. Everyone sympathised, helped, and hoped for her recovery, but, unfortunately, despite all the efforts of the doctors, they could not save her.”

The institution described Marian’s passing as a profoundly painful loss, remembering her as an exceptionally brilliant and dedicated student.

According to the university, Marian enrolled in 2020 and quickly distinguished herself through her outstanding academic performance and rigorous work ethic. Driven by a desire to expand her professional horizons, she had already completed prestigious international clinical internships at the University of Cambridge in 2024 and Biruni University in 2025.

The academic community also paid a warm tribute to her personal character, describing her as a compassionate, cheerful, and deeply kind-hearted individual.

“Nnani Adaobi Marian was a bright, sincere and kind-hearted person,” the university added. “She easily found common ground with people and was distinguished by her thirst for knowledge, hard work and sincere desire to help others.”

The fatal strike occurred when one of the Russian aerial bombs detonated on a roadway in the Kholodnohirskyi district, killing Huseynova, critically injuring Marian, and wounding at least 12 other bystanders.

Marian’s tragic death highlights the mounting civilian toll of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, which continues to cut short the lives and aspirations of international students caught in the crossfire.
