The Rivers State Government has warned of the danger in the extended exposure of bottled and sachet water to sunlight.
Speaking at the flagged-off the “CAMPAIGN AGAINST EXPOSURE OF BOTTLED/SACHET WATER TO SUNLIGHT” the Rivers State Commisioner for Water Resources, Hon Tamunosisi Gogo Jaja revealed that plastic containers/sachets exposed to sunlight emit harmful chemicals which sip into the water and is consumed by unsuspecting members of the public.
He cautioned against the practice of businesses leaving their water and other plastic packed products out in the sun or transporting their plastic/sachet water while exposed to the sunlight in open vans.
He revealed this type of exposure causes skin dieases, lukemia, cancer and increased mortality rate.
The Commisioner who expressed Governor Wike’s desire to curb this health threat called on critical stakeholders and the Press to actively enlighten the public on the need to properly store their products away from the sun and to immediately stop consuming exposed bottled/sachet water.
Dr Tamunosisi who stated the Ministry’s renewed effort in improving water quality in the state insisted there would be no cutting corners in the quality of water made avialable to people of the state.
