The House of Representatives rejected the second reading of a bill on Thursday that proposed a single six-year term for presidents and governors.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere and 33 others, proposed several constitutional amendments, including a single six-year term for the President and State Governors, the rotation of key political offices among Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, and the scheduling of all elections on the same day.

Titled, “A Bill for an Act to Alter the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended),” it also aimed to revise other related matters.

Introduced by Ugochinyere and seconded for a second reading, the bill was put to a voice vote by Speaker Abbas Tajuddeen.

When members responded with a loud “Nay,” the Speaker declared that the bill had been rejected, failing to pass the second reading.
