The House of Representatives has dissolved all its ad hoc committees with effect from August 28, 2026, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas has ordered.
In a directive, the House said the committees had exceeded the periods allotted for their assignments. Only two committees had sought extensions, which have also expired.
Chairpersons have been directed to hand over all outstanding reports, working documents and records to the Office of the Clerk for safekeeping.
The development has raised concerns over the fate of several ongoing investigations. Among the affected panels were committees probing security intervention funds from 2020 to date, expenditure in the power sector, concessionaire-operated ports, pre-shipment inspection of exports, alleged non-remittance of crude-oil proceeds, and activities of the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council.
Civil society groups and observers are asking whether unfinished investigations will be published, if findings will be transferred to standing committees, and whether agencies or individuals already summoned will still be held accountable.
The House says the move is procedural. But with public funds, witness testimonies and documents already committed to the probes, Nigerians are demanding transparency on what happens next.
