A school principal has been remanded in custody for allegedly attempting to shield a teacher accused of raping a 6-year-old pupil.

The principal was arraigned before a magistrate court, which ordered that he be kept in detention pending further investigation into the case.

The charge against him borders on obstruction of justice and conspiracy, following allegations that he interfered with efforts to report and prosecute the suspected teacher.

Prosecutors told the court that the accused teacher allegedly assaulted the minor on school premises, and that the principal took steps to conceal the incident instead of reporting it to authorities.

The prosecution said such actions undermined child protection laws and the duty of care expected of school administrators.

The court adjourned the matter to allow police to complete investigations and to enable the prosecution to present more evidence.

Child rights groups and parents have condemned the incident, calling for swift justice and stronger safeguards to protect pupils in schools.

Authorities said the teacher accused of rape remains in custody and will also face prosecution.
