The Commissioner of Police in Cross River, Mr Ajo Ordue, has warned police personnel against illegal and prolonged detention of suspects, extortion, harassment and other forms of unprofessional conduct.
Ordue gave the warning on Friday during impromptu supervisory visits to Uwanse, Efut and Atakpa Police Divisions in Calabar South.
He described the exercise as part of his “Management by Walking About” approach to policing, aimed at firsthand assessment of operational activities across police formations.
During the visits, the commissioner inspected facilities, interacted with personnel and assessed the operational activities and challenges confronting the three divisions.
Ordue directed commanders to ensure that all arrests and detentions were properly documented and handled strictly in accordance with the law and established procedures.
He also warned officers against extortion and harassment, saying such conduct undermines public confidence and damages the reputation of the force.
The CP stressed the need for personnel to discharge their duties with integrity, professionalism and respect for citizens’ fundamental rights, noting that effective policing requires public trust.
He charged Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and heads of formations to strengthen supervision and take responsibility for personnel under their command.
According to Ordue, the supervisory exercise will continue across the state to build a disciplined, responsive and community-oriented command.
Command Spokesman, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said the approach would strengthen supervision and discipline within the command.
