The Delta State Police Command has demoted two officers found guilty of extorting a motorist through a Point-of-Sale (POS) terminal inside a police station in Asaba, reaffirming the Inspector-General of Police’s zero-tolerance stance on extortion and other forms of misconduct.

The officers, Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim, both attached to the ‘C’ Division, Asaba, were captured in a viral video on January 13, 2026, receiving money from a motorist through a POS terminal within the station.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, upheld the findings of an orderly room trial, which found the officers guilty of disobedience to lawful order, extortion and discreditable conduct contrary to the provisions of the Police Act, 2020.

Following the disciplinary proceedings, Inspector Jeremiah was reduced in rank to Sergeant, while Corporal Ehirim was demoted to Constable.

CP Oyeniyi reiterated that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun’s successor, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, maintains a zero-tolerance policy on extortion and has expressly prohibited the use of Point-of-Sale terminals and other electronic payment platforms in police stations and formations across the country.

“No officer is authorised to demand or receive money from members of the public under any guise. Any officer found culpable will face appropriate disciplinary action,” the commissioner said.

He urged officers and men of the command to uphold professionalism, integrity and respect for the rights of citizens, describing the punishment as a deterrent to others.

He also encouraged members of the public to report cases of police misconduct through the Command’s Complaint Response Unit.
