The Kaduna State Police Command has stopped a planned political rally by supporters of former presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, which was scheduled to hold in honour of his birthday.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, the Command said it received credible intelligence indicating that the rally, though meant to show solidarity, could be infiltrated by criminal elements intending to cause violence and disrupt public order.

The police warned that all political rallies and public gatherings of that nature remain suspended across the state until the official commencement of political activities as outlined by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The Command further explained that some political parties had officially notified the police of their primaries taking place on the same day as the proposed rally.

It said this clash of events raised security concerns, with fears that it could heighten tension, provoke clashes, and lead to a breakdown of law and order in some areas.

‘In view of these developments, the Command strongly advises the organisers of the planned Peter Obi rally to suspend any gathering or procession’, the statement said.

The command added that ‘If they wish to honour their principal, such activities should be conducted in a safe and non-disruptive manner’.

The police also cautioned that anyone who disregards the directive risks facing legal consequences.

‘The Command further notes that the Parties primaries for the forthcoming bye election in the state are scheduled by INEC to take place on the same date as the proposed rally, and the parties have formally notified the Police of their event, in line with established protocols.

It is important to state that the planned rally is expected to overlap with and disrupt several areas designated for the conduct of the other political parties’ primaries, thereby posing a significant risk of tension, clashes, and breakdown of law’.

‘While the Command respects the right of individuals to associate and celebrate their political leaders, it is important to emphasise that all forms of political rallies and public gatherings of a political nature remain suspended across the State until the official commencement date of political activities, as stipulated by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

‘The Kaduna State Police Command remains committed to safeguarding the lives and property of all residents and will not hesitate to take necessary legal action against any individual or group found violating this directive’.

The Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining public peace and order, urging residents to cooperate with security agencies in their efforts to ensure safety across the state.
