Police have arrested two men for allegedly vandalizing and stealing street light cables at Ikate, Lekki, Lagos valued at N2,500,000 and plunging the residents in the area in darkness.
The duo identified as Sunday Babatunde, 29, and David Sammaru,22 were arrested by men of the Maroko police division, Lekki
Police alleged that nemesis caught up with the defendants when while they were allegedly vandalizing the cables, concerned residents in the area sighted them and quickly sent a distress call to the Divisional Police Officer, DPO in charge of Maroko division, Lekki.
The DPO quickly led his men to the scene to arrest the suspects, but on sighting the police, they took their heels with the stolen cables.
The Police pursued them, arrested them and recovered the cables.
The defendants were charged before the Tinubu Magistrate’s Court after an investigation by Inspector Elizabeth Ekanem and her team.
They were slammed with a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy to wit vandalizing cables and stealing.
Police prosecuting counsel, Inspector Hafsat Ajibode told the Court in the charge marked M/7/2024 that the defendants committed the offence on 6 April 2024 at White Sand School, Ikate, Lekki, Lagos.
Ajibode informed the court that the defendants vandalized the Lagos State Street light Cables and plunged the residents in the area into darkness before they were arrested.
She said the offences, the defendants committed were punishable under sections 411 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges and Magistrate, Mrs Gbajumo Ayoku granted them N500,000 bail each with two sureties each in like sum.
Ayoku adjourned the case till 27 May 2024 for mention and ordered that the defendants be detained at the Ikoyi correctional facility till they perfected the bail conditions
