Men of the Lagos State Police Command on Friday arraigned two men in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing gold jewellery and money valued at N25.08 million.

The defendants, Dennis Legal, 33, a laundry man, and Hashimu Kabiru, 35, a trader all residents of 18 Adesuyi St., Akute and Ojodu, Lagos.

They are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and receiving stolen goods.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Prosecutor, Insp Samuel Mishozunnu told the court that the offences were committed on May 2 at 37, Moriola Opeyemi St, Fagbileye Estate, Isheri, Lagos.

The prosecutor said that Legal (first defendant) secured a housekeeper for the complainant, Mrs Opeyemi Oluwatosin, early in the year.

“The complainant travelled and on her arrival discovered that the housekeeper had allegedly broken into her room and stolen some jewellery valued at N25 million.

“The housekeeper, now at large, also stole N80,000 from her employer’s room,” he said.

Mishozunnu said that when the guarantor, the first defendant, was contacted, he ignored the complaint but later sent some of the stolen jewellery to the woman.

The prosecutor said that Legal was arrested and later led the police to the arrest of Kabiru (the second defendant) as one of the people who bought the stolen jewellery

The offences, he said, contravened Sections 287, 328 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Magistrate, Mrs F. D Hughes granted the defendants bail of N5 million each with two sureties in like sum.

Hughes adjourned the case until July 31, for mention.
