At least five people have been killed in a new attack on Gwan-Ajang village in Foron District, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The assault occurred on Sunday night, marking the latest in a series of violent incidents that have continued to plague communities across the state despite repeated security interventions.
The Plateau State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that officers received a distress call at about 9:22 pm and immediately deployed personnel to the area.
Police Public Relations Officer, Alfred Alabo, told journalists that residents were attending a social gathering when gunmen struck.
He explained that security operatives arrived at the scene to find several victims lying in pools of blood, and five of them were confirmed dead.
Alabo noted that the community lies near the boundary between Barkin Ladi and Mangu local government areas, leading to varying accounts of the exact location of the attack.
The police spokesperson said the Commissioner of Police had directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations to coordinate efforts to track down those responsible. He added that security personnel were working closely with Operation Safe Haven and other formations deployed to the area, and that calm had been restored.
However, community leaders disputed the police casualty figure. The National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youths Moulder Association, Rwang Tengwong, alleged that at least seven people were killed and more than ten others seriously injured during the attack.
