The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has condemned Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, over his directive to newly sworn-in local government chairmen to ensure the All Progressives Congress, APC, wins their councils in the 2027 general elections or risk removal from office.
Speaking on Channels TV on Saturday, PDP Publicity Secretary in Ebonyi, Darlington Peter-Onwe, described the governor’s remarks during a live radio programme on Friday as capable of stoking political violence ahead of the polls.
“The Governor should apologise to Ebonyians or resign. He should retract the statement or step down because he has violated the fundamental objectives and directive principles of state policy,” Peter-Onwe stated.
He argued that Section 14 of the Constitution provides that the primary responsibility of government is the protection of lives and property.
“By making such statements, he is now the one insinuating violence,” the PDP spokesman added.
The party urged the governor to retract the directive, warning that using state office to coerce electoral outcomes undermines democracy and the rule of law.
