The Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) has sealed 531 illegal premises in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Pharm. Stephen Esumobi, Director of Enforcement at PCN, announced the closures during a press briefing on Friday in Abuja.
He said the closure was conducted during an enforcement exercise from June 24 to June 27.
He added that out of 908 premises inspected, 90 pharmacies, 144 patent medicine shops, and 297 illegal medicine shops were shut down for various violations, including operating without registration, non-renewal of premises certificates, and stocking unauthorised medicines.
Esumobi highlighted that “some licensed premises were also sealed for engaging in activities detrimental to public health, such as administering drugs intravenously in unhygienic conditions”. The PCN aims to ensure the public has access to safe and effective medicines.
The council will continue its efforts to mitigate risks and promote optimal therapeutic benefits for the public.
