Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has revealed that a total of 2.2 million individuals have serious humanitarian multi-sectoral needs in the State.
The Governor made the revelation while receiving the United States of America (USA) Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Beth Leonard at the Government house in Yola on Thursday, May 19th, 2022.
The Governor cited an example with Madagali Local Government Area where over 80% of households in the area are in dire need of food and security, among other humanitarian needs.
He informed the US Ambassador that Adamawa has 250,000 IDPs, 850,000 returnees, 2.5m individuals in host communities and also posited that 54% of the population are female, while 60% are children.
He added that more than 100,000 individuals living with disabilities, he emphasized that majority of IDPs have indicated their readiness to return to their respective communities.
He further revealed that government, through its dynamic and driven rendezvous with development partners, is providing basic amenities services like health centres and schools within host communities and also protecting the citizens.
Governor Fintiri further stated that his administration has passed laws such as the Child Protection Bill, Violence Against Persons Prohibition, State Health Insurance Scheme, and Peace and Conflict Resolution Commission, among others all in a bid to better the lives of the citizenry.
𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐫𝐢 advocated for the provision of water supply, sanitation facilities, hygiene support in reducing malnutrition, and the stoppage of open defication to curtail the spread of various diseases in the State.
The US Ambassador to Nigeria in her response commended Governor Fintiri for his commitment to quality education and also for collaborating with humanitarian stakeholders as a hallmark of good governance.
She revealed that the USA has been working on a number of humanitarian initiatives in the state since 2016, ranging from emergency services to IDPs, health services, and supporting livelihoods.
The US Ambassador to Nigeria was accompanied to Government House, Yola, by USAID Mission Director,Ann Patterson, Political Officer of the US Embassy,Rolf Olson, and Rachel Goldstein as well as other senior officials of the embassy.
The US Ambassador was in Adamawa State to launch a project that will address the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe States.
