Onion farmers in Jigawa State have lost produce worth nearly N1 billion Naira due to the use of poor quality seeds during last year’s rainy season.
The Chairman of the Jigawa Onion Farmers Association, Malam Dauda Marma, disclosed this in an interview with Jigawa state radio.
He explained that some dishonest traders distributed substandard onion seeds imported from Morocco to farmers, which resulted in heavy losses.
According to him, the seeds were supplied into the state through Kebbi and Yobe States.
Malam Dauda warned that going forward, anyone found selling substandard seeds in Jigawa will be processed to the full extent of the law.
“As an association we are working towards establishing an onion market in Marma town, Kirikasamma Local government area, to boost onion farming, as several African countries have shown interest in our farm produce,” Dauda revealed.
