A 200 level medical student of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has reportedly taken his own life after failing his examinations for the second time.
In a statement today, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, confirmed that the 21-year-old student identified as Ajibola Ibitayo with matriculation number DEN/2021/023, was studying in the Faculty of Dentistry.
According to Olarewaju, results of the last semester examinations were released on yesterday, showing that Ibitayo would have to repeat Part Two for another academic year.
He had already been repeating the same level from the previous session.
The university said Ibitayo, whose father is a medical doctor, allegedly injected himself at his parents’ home in Ejigbo, Osun State.
The shocking incident has left his family, faculty members, classmates, and the entire OAU community in grief.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Simeon Bamire, described the incident as heartbreaking and urged parents and guardians to teach their children and wards that setbacks, including academic failures, are not the end of life.
He advised students to see failure as a redirection towards future success, not as a final defeat.
Bamire prayed for God’s comfort for the bereaved parents, the Faculty of Dentistry, the College of Health Sciences, and the wider university community, asking for the strength to bear what he called an irreparable loss.
