The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has raised concern over the security of corps members in Enugu State.

The NYSC Coordinator in the state, Mr. Sam Ujogu Ujogu, who stated this on Wednesday in Enugu during the NYSC corps/employers’ workshop, said that the security of corps members in all the local councils of the state was an issue that must always receive adequate attention.

The state coordinator commended the state government for setting the pace in absorbing corps members and for making their welfare a priority.

He applauded all employers who had provided a conducive environment for corps members but appealed to them to do more.

Ujogu, however, said that much still needed to be done to improve the welfare of corps members deployed to the state.

Also, Ibrahim, who was represented by the Director, NYSC, South-East Area Office, Mrs. Ngozi Nwatarali, said the workshop served as an avenue for the exchange of ideas that would help to improve the scheme.

Similarly, the NYSC in Anambra State has warned against unfair treatment and under-utilisation of corps members by their employers.

The state’s Coordinator, Mrs. Yetunde Baberinwa, who stated this during a workshop titled, “Optimising the NYSC/Corps Members Partnership for National Development in the Contest of the New Normal,” yesterday, cautioned employers to treat corps members very well.

She said that the corps members were not to be paid on commission but on an agreed monthly allowance of not less than N10,000 to motivate them and argue the Federal Government allowance.

“The NYSC frowns at employers who treat corps members as cheap labour. Such act is unacceptable,” she noted.
