One of Zamfara State’s most feared bandit leaders, Kachalla Sani Yellow, has been killed in Anka Local Government Area, bringing to an end a reign marked by mass kidnappings, deadly raids and cattle rustling across the North-West.
However, conflicting accounts have emerged on the circumstances surrounding his death, with local sources and security operatives giving different versions.
One account indicates that Yellow was ambushed and shot dead on Friday at the Dan Jibga Market in Anka by gunmen believed to be loyal to a rival bandit kingpin, Dogo Gide.
Observers of local armed groups suggest the daytime assassination points to an intensifying power struggle and territorial rivalry among bandit factions in Zamfara State.
Conversely, security sources attribute his death to a coordinated counter-banditry operation.
According to this version, Yellow was neutralized during an offensive targeting criminal hideouts in the Anka axis, executed by formal security forces alongside members of the Maiduguri Special Vigilantes.
Regardless of the conflicting reports, the elimination of Yellow is seen as a major blow to criminal networks in the region.
He was considered a highly influential commander operating across the Anka, Bukkuyum, and Maru local government areas, where his network terrorized rural communities, enforced illegal levies, and displaced thousands of residents.
Following the news of his death, fresh violence has broken out in parts of the Tsafe Local Government Area, suspected to be reprisal attacks.
Gunmen reportedly loyal to another bandit leader, Adamu Aliero, raided several villages, killing two residents and abducting over 60 people.
The attackers also looted food supplies and livestock before retreating into the forests. In response, troops from Operation Fansan Yanma and police personnel have intensified patrols and launched rescue operations to track the attackers and secure the release of the abducted victims.
