The University of Benin (UNIBEN ) has distanced itself from a viral shooting incident reported outside the Ugbowo Campus of the institution, clarifying that the incident did not involve any of its students.

A video has gone viral showing the moment an individual reported to be a final-year student of the University of Benin was allegedly shot while driving through the campus after writing an examination.

The video, obtained on Monday, was posted on X by a verified handle, @richyking133, who said the incident happened at the UNIBEN main gate.

He wrote, “Jesus just now for main gate UNIBEN MAIN GATE! Please reshare. Please, you all stay safe!!!!”

Reacting to the development, in a Monday statement signed by the school’s spokesperson, Dr Benedicta Ehanire, the institution blamed the incident on a fallout of cult activities outside the Campus.

The statement reads, “The University of Benin has dissociated its staff and students from the violent clash outside the Ugbowo Campus of the Institution.

“Preliminary reports indicate that the said incident is a fallout of cult activities outside the Campus and does not involve any University staff or students. Management of the University, while expressing regrets over the reported fatality, urges members of the University community to remain vigilant and to go about their academic activities on campus peacefully.”

Based on the video, the victim was driving out of the school’s main gate in his JLK Mercedes-Benz, and reports suggested that the incident occurred at Ugbowo on Sunday night.
