The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has firmly denied reports suggesting it is preparing to dissolve its structure in support of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) or its leading figures.

The party’s leadership says while alliances remain a possibility, the NNPP is not surrendering its identity or political machinery to anyone.

Speaking on the sidelines of the party’s 11th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, NNPP National Chairman, Bala Yusuf, dismissed reports that the party had entered into any agreement with former presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso, Peter Obi, the NDC, or any other political platform.

According to Yusuf, the NNPP remains an independent political party and has not negotiated any arrangement that would see it merge with or collapse into another organisation.

He stressed that Kwankwaso’s decision to join the NDC does not automatically translate into the NNPP abandoning its structure or political future.

The clarification comes months after the party suffered major political losses, including the exit of its only elected governor, Abba Yusuf of Kano State, who moved to the ruling APC alongside several political appointees.

The NNPP also witnessed the departure of key figures such as Kwankwaso and former National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, to the NDC.

However, Yusuf insisted that the departure of prominent members would not force the party into political submission.

“Just because our former presidential candidate joined another party does not mean we will collapse our structure for him or any other political platform,” he stated.

Addressing the party’s position on the 2027 presidential election, Yusuf explained that the NNPP’s decision not to immediately present a candidate should not be interpreted as an endorsement of any aspirant.

He argued that with more than 20 registered political parties in Nigeria, it is unnecessary for every party to field candidates solely for the sake of participation.

Instead, he said the NNPP is prioritising the search for credible leadership capable of addressing the country’s challenges.

“Nigeria is facing serious difficulties. What matters most is identifying competent, focused and credible leadership that can move the country forward,” Yusuf said.

Party Open To Strategic Alliances
While ruling out any existing agreement with the NDC or APC, the NNPP chairman disclosed that the party remains open to future alliances if common political values and objectives exist.

According to him, the party will carefully evaluate candidates and political platforms before deciding its next move ahead of 2027.

He noted that any partnership would depend on shared constitutional principles, policy direction and commitment to national developmen

“For now, we do not have any particular party in mind. But if another party’s manifesto and ideals align with ours, we can explore working together for the benefit of Nigeria,” Yusuf added.
