The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, has reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to strengthening proactive disaster management across the country through sustained collaboration with relevant institutions, agencies, and stakeholders to promote risk mitigation and community resilience.

Mrs. Zubaida Umar stated this while receiving a delegation from the Simulation and Crisis Management Directorate of the Department of State Services, which paid a working visit to her office at NEMA Headquarters in Abuja.

The Director General noted that NEMA remains focused on advancing a proactive and risk-informed approach to disaster management, with emphasis on early warning dissemination, preparedness, mitigation, and coordinated response to emerging threats.

She explained that following the release of the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the 2026 Annual Flood Outlook (AFO) by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), NEMA immediately activated a series of strategic actions aimed at enhancing preparedness and reducing the impact of anticipated flooding during the 2026 rainy season.

According to her, the Agency has since intensified stakeholder engagements, convened technical coordination platforms, and commenced targeted sensitization and advocacy to encourage state governments and at-risk communities to take timely preventive measures against flood-related risks.

Mrs. Zubaida Umar appreciated the visit by the Directorate and assured the delegation of NEMA’s readiness to collaborate with the Director in strengthening disaster preparedness, simulation planning, and coordinated emergency response across the country.

Earlier, the Acting Assistant Director General of the Directorate Mrs. Safiya Yusuf, said the visit was to familiarize NEMA with the operations of the Directorate, particularly its role in providing critical support before, during, and after emergencies and disaster situations.

She expressed the Directorate’s readiness to work closely with NEMA in deepening institutional preparedness and strengthening national crisis response mechanisms
