The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has launched the Meta-Supported Initiatives for Data Protection (M-SIDP), a programme designed to strengthen data protection safeguards and promote privacy rights across Nigeria.

The initiative followed a 2025 court-approved settlement with Meta Platforms Inc after regulatory proceedings.

Under the agreement, Meta will support a two-year programme aimed at enhancing public confidence in data protection and privacy practices in line with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act) 2023, the General Application and Implementation Directive (GAID), and the NDPC Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP) 2023–2027. According to the Commission, the programme will focus on key areas including:

  • Governance, research and development in data protection;
  • Promoting safety and sustainability within the technology and digital ecosystem;
  • Capacity building for Data Protection Officers (DPOs) and Data Protection Compliance Organisations (DPCOs);
  • Public awareness campaigns targeted at data subjects, particularly vulnerable groups.

The NDPC emphasised that the settlement does not affect its statutory authority to regulate data processing activities in Nigeria and enforce compliance with applicable laws.

The Commission also assured stakeholders that regular updates would be provided on the implementation of the initiative and called for broad support from government institutions, private sector organisations, civil society groups and the public to strengthen Nigeria’s data protection and privacy ecosystem.
