The Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted an alleged Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) truck conveying 748.02kg of tramadol and arrested two suspects along the Benin-Lagos Expressway.
The Edo State Commander of the NDLEA, Mitchell Ofoyeju, PhD, in a Press release made available to journalists in Benin City on Monday, noted that the success of the operation is in line with the directive of the Chairman of the agency, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), to intensify proactive measures aimed at curbing inter-state drug trafficking across the country.
On Thursday, April 23, 2026, the command’s sustained efforts yielded results with the interception of a Mercedes-Benz truck branded with the NLC insignia and bearing the registration number FCT NLC 146 FC.
The vehicle, which was en route from Lagos to Onitsha in Anambra State, was found to be conveying ninety-five cartons containing one million, one hundred and ninety-six thousand capsules and tablets of psychotropic substances.
Two suspects, identified as Osagie Igbinibo, aged 43, and Omijie Malik, aged 44, were arrested in connection with the seizure.
Further breakdown of the consignment revealed a total of 748.02 kilograms of controlled drugs, including 23 cartons of tramadol 100mg with 440,000 capsules weighing 264 kilograms; 40 cartons of tramadol 50mg comprising 600,000 capsules weighing 180 kilograms; 7 cartons of Rohypnol containing 84,000 tablets weighing 25.2 kilograms; 19 cartons of diazepam injection with 76,000 ampoules weighing 242.82 kilograms; and 6 cartons of bromazepam with 72,000 tablets weighing 36 kilograms.
The interception was made during a routine motorised patrol, highlighting the agency’s sustained commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks and safeguarding public health.
Reacting to the development, the Commander of Narcotics, Dr Mitchell Ofoyeju, expressed concern over the dangers posed by such substances, particularly to young.
