The Nigeria Customs Service has foiled a major security threat with the interception of a container concealing parts of over 140 pump-action rifles and the seizure of cannabis-infused products worth ₦373.8 million at Tincan Island Port.
Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, announced the seizures in Lagos on Thursday, 6 August 2026. He said the container arrived aboard MV VELIKA on 8 July 2026 and was flagged by the Service’s intelligence-driven risk management system.
A physical examination revealed knocked-down components preliminarily identified as JoJeff pump-action rifles concealed in crates. Two suspects have been arrested, while investigations continue to track a principal suspect still at large.
In a separate operation, officers intercepted two 40-foot containers carrying cannabis-infused cookies, gummies and pre-rolls hidden among used vehicles, generators and batteries. The seizure comprised 109 cartons of Delta-8 pre-roll cookies, 125 cartons of Delta-8 gummies and 73 cartons of cannabis cookies.
Adeniyi said the interceptions show the sophistication of transnational criminal networks.
He warned that with elections approaching, the Service will redouble efforts to block attempts to use borders and ports to import dangerous items, and vowed that no officer found complicit will be spared.
