The fact finding committee set up by the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Owerri branch to unravel the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault on a lawyer, has indicted the Assistant Chief Registrar, High Court, Owerri, Augustina Emenike, for assaulting Barrister Olachi Madonna Anosike.
The incident occurred at the Chief Magistrate Court, Awaka in Owerri North Magisterial District, headed by Mrs. Emenike.
The fact finding committee, headed by Barrister Chetachi Udeh, while presenting its findings at the Bar Centre, Owerri, indicted the Assistant Chief Registrar, Mrs. Augustina Chinwe Emenike for the offence, but added that the Chairman of the High Court Welfare Scheme had written to the branch an apology letter on her behalf.
The letter was read during the presentation.
Receiving the report, the NBA Chairman, Owerri branch, Chris Ihentuge, while confirming the report asserted that the committee found the Registrar culpable.
He also confirmed that a letter of apology, though not from the Registrar, but written by the Chairman of the High Court Welfare Scheme on her behalf, was read out.
“The Executive Committee will review the report and the apology letter and act on the implications of both and take necessary actions,” he said.
Commenting on the outcome of the report of the committee, some lawyers, who don’t want their names in print, called for adequate sanctions on the Assistant Chief Registrar so as to serve as a deterrent to others.
They recommended that the Registrar should personally apologize to the NBA Owerri Branch and to Barrister Anosike in particular, adding that appropriate punishment should be taken on her by the judiciary.
