This decision was made by the Legislative Arm of the Union over alleged abuse of office and gross misconduct.

In a letter dated March 26, following an emergency plenary session held at the Moot Court of the university’s Faculty of Law, the legislature cited five offenses for his suspension.

According to the letter issued to the president, the suspension was executed in accordance with the provisions of Article Six, Section 5(2)(c) of the union’s constitution.

Among the offenses listed, Buhari was accused of failing to provide proper modalities for the distribution of palliatives provided by the State Government for students.

He allegedly introduced a ‘palliative beneficiary card’ without engaging the Senate, leading to a fatal stampede that claimed the lives of students and left several others injured.

Other offenses include failure to appear before a committee of investigation set up by the Senate, failure to call and preside over EXCO meetings as directed by the Senate, inaccessibility, and failure to obtain the signatory of the union account.

The Senate, therefore, directed Buhari to hand over the affairs of the union and all documents in his possession to his Vice, Rasheedah Aroke, pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation by a committee.

Additionally, he was warned not to be seen around the SUG Secretariat or have access to the union’s documents.

The suspension was resolved during a plenary session following a motion moved by Senator Emmanuel Jeremiah Ablaba and seconded by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Business, Senator Abdulkareem Anzaku.
