The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has confirmed that the NIVEA Black & White Roll-On deodorant produced in Nigeria is safe for public use.

This follows the agency’s initial Safety Alert Notification issued on October 31, 2024, regarding the NIVEA BLACK & WHITE Invisible Roll-on (50 ml), specifically batch number 93529610, in relation to the European Union’s RAPEX system, which alerts for dangerous non-food products.

In its latest update on November 2, 2024, NAFDAC clarified that the Nigerian-manufactured NIVEA Black & White Roll-On does not contain the non-compliant ingredient BMHCA (Lilial).

“Our recent investigation confirmed that the NIVEA Black & White Roll-On deodorant produced locally is free from BMHCA,” NAFDAC stated.

Following the initial alert, Beiersdorf, the manufacturer of NIVEA, reassured customers that batch No. 93529610 had not been marketed in Nigeria and therefore had not been subject to a recall in the country.

The company explained that this batch had expired in January 2022, when it was still compliant with European regulations, which later banned the ingredient Lilial from cosmetic products starting March 1, 2022.

Beiersdorf affirmed its commitment to consumer safety, noting that it had reformulated its entire NIVEA product line, removing Lilial well ahead of the European ban.

“Our NIVEA Black & White Invisible Roll-On has been Lilial-free globally, including in Nigeria, since at least 2020,” Beiersdorf stated.

The company also emphasized its proactive measures, informing trade partners to withdraw any remaining Lilial-containing products before the regulation took effect, ensuring compliance with European Cosmetic Product Regulation.
