The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has alerted Nigerians to an import ban placed on Bulmex Parboiled Rice by the Niger Republic over safety concerns.

In Public Alert No. 034/2026, NAFDAC said the Niger Republic’s Ministry of Trade and Industry prohibited the importation and distribution of the product following an investigation by the Agadez Regional Directorate of Commerce and Industry.

According to the report, iron debris was found in the rice, rendering it unsafe for consumption.

NAFDAC stated that Bulmex rice is marketed as Indian parboiled rice and Pakistani long-grain rice. Key suppliers listed in the notification include Karam Food Grains Private Limited, Paragon Commodities Limited, and Imoro Brunya/Sulemana Imoro Distribution Company.

The agency noted that while the product is claimed to be marketed in Nigeria and Niger, its presence in the Nigerian market has not been confirmed. The alert is aimed at strengthening surveillance and preventing possible circulation through cross-border trade.

Consumers are urged to report any suspected sale of substandard or counterfeit products to the nearest NAFDAC office, call 0800-162-3322, or email sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.
