The President and Chief Executive Officer of MTN Group, Ralph Mupita, has issued an urgent appeal for increased social solidarity and deeper economic integration across Africa, warning that rising cross-border tensions threaten to derail the continent’s development goals.

His remarks arrive during a period of heightened diplomatic friction, fueled by recent anti-immigrant demonstrations in South Africa and Ghana. These incidents have sparked widespread public outcry and led to calls for retaliatory actions against businesses associated with those nations, particularly in markets like Nigeria.

Writing ahead of a regional dialogue on migration, Mupita emphasized that Africa’s long-term prosperity is inextricably linked to its ability to maintain social cohesion and uphold the rule of law.

He cautioned that recurring episodes of unrest and Afrophobia significantly damage the continent’s reputation, potentially deterring international investors who are essential for funding infrastructure, industrial growth, and job creation.

Business leaders and policymakers have expressed growing concern that such instability undermines regional integration efforts, most notably the African Continental Free Trade Area, which seeks to establish a unified market for goods and services.

Experts note that political volatility remains a major deterrent for foreign direct investment into Sub-Saharan Africa, as investors prioritize stable environments for capital deployment.

While Mupita confirmed that MTN—which holds a massive operational footprint across South Africa, Nigeria, and Ghana—has not yet seen a direct impact on its business performance, he stated that the company remains highly sensitive to developments in its key markets.

Given the telecom giant’s role in underpinning digital infrastructure and commerce across the continent, regional stability is a critical factor for its ongoing operations.

Mupita further noted that while individual governments bear the primary responsibility for enforcing laws and protecting both citizens and corporate entities, achieving lasting peace requires a collective commitment to shared prosperity.

He urged African nations to move beyond rhetoric and strengthen economic ties, arguing that inclusive growth is the most effective safeguard against the social tensions currently challenging the continent’s progress.
