Jose Mourinho has been handed a four-match by UEFA for verbally abusing a referee following his club’s Europa League final loss.
The European football governing body announced the sanction on Wednesday.
Mourinho’s AS Roma lost the final to Sevilla on penalties on May 31, with the Portuguese manager getting aggrieved over refereeing decisions during the showpiece.
He had confronted Martin Taylor, the English official, after the match and harrassed the 44-year-old centre referee.
His actions resulted in public outcry, prompting UEFA to slap the 60-year-old with a four-match touchline ban in European matches.
According to Sky Sports, in addition to Mourinho’s ban, Roma were also fined £47,500 and restricted from selling tickets to their supporters for their next European match on the road.
The fine is a consequence of other infractions during the final; the lighting of fireworks, throwing of objects, acts of damage and crowd disturbances as well as improper team conduct.
Mourinho’s suspension means he will miss the club’s start to the Europa League campaign next season after finishing sixth in Serie A.
The Portuguese has taken Roma to consecutive European finals, winning the UEFA Conference League for the Rome-based club in the 2021/2022 season.
