It is understood he was ahead on points in the scheduled eight-round light-heavyweight contest against Mbanugu, who has an impressive record of 12 wins.

According to the board Secretary-General, Remi Aboderin, the 40-year-old former National and West African light -heavyweight champion was not authorized to participate in the bout that led to his death.

Aboderin also noted that the deceased decided to fight on Saturday after his initial fight scheduled for Friday was canceled.

The board Secretary-General, further disclosed that Olanrewaju was initially given the approval to fight, however, complications arose when he was deemed overweight during the weigh-in on Thursday.

Despite the cancellation, Olanrewaju opted to fight on Saturday against all odds.

Speaking about the incident, the mother of the late boxer, in a video online urged President Bola Tinubu to take action and ensure that all those responsible for her son’s death are held accountable

She added that Olanrewaju was her only son, saying “President Tinubu please help me. Segun was my only child. He was only 5 years old when his father d!ed in 1993 during June 12 saga. Since then I have been raising him all by myself.

” Few hours to his demise he sent me a message that he was being threatened to step down for the opponent he had the boxing match with which he refused.

“It was after the match that we read the message. We didn’t know he had passed away. He already won round 1 and round 2, It was in round 3 that he collapsed. Please help me. He had a wife and little kids. I need justice for my son’
