He noted that the flood, which swept through the ancient town, claimed 209 lives, displaced 3,534 persons, affected 458 households, and destroyed 280 houses and 31 shops.

“With a sober heart, we recall the sad event that shook the very foundation of humanity in Mokwa. This catastrophe has shattered hopes, but we are determined to rebuild and recover,” the governor was quoted as saying.

As part of the state’s comprehensive response, Governor Bago approved a ₦1 billion compensation fund for affected households and an additional ₦7 billion for the reconstruction of critical infrastructure, including roads and bridges destroyed by the flood.

He announced that each of the 458 affected households will receive ₦1 million, along with 25 bags of assorted grains, including:10 bags of rice, 5 bags of maize, 5 bags of sorghum, 5 bags of millet

In a compassionate gesture, the governor also directed the payment of ₦1 million each to the next of kin of all the 209 deceased victims.

Additionally, each owner of the 280 damaged houses and 31 shops will receive ₦500,000 for reconstruction.

“This is only the first step in our rebuilding and recovery efforts. We will not rest until Mokwa regains its economic and social strength.”
