Malian music icon Salif Keita has cancelled his planned performances in South Africa, citing concerns over recent attacks and hostility directed at migrants in the country.*
In a statement, the veteran singer said he could not remain silent amid reports of violence targeting African migrants and decided to withdraw from upcoming commercial events in South Africa. He stressed that the decision was not a rejection of the country, but a stand against violence and discrimination.
Keita expressed sympathy for migrants seeking better opportunities, safety and dignity, noting that such treatment contradicts the values of unity and solidarity that South Africa has long represented across the continent.
The singer, whose career spans more than five decades, said he hopes for a future where peace and respect for all people prevail, leaving open the possibility of returning to perform in the country.
South Africa has witnessed growing tensions over immigration in recent months, with protests and clashes prompting concerns across Africa and leading many foreign nationals to leave the country.
