The Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, has sealed several shops along the Tejuosho-Ojuelegba corridor for violating the state’s environmental sanitation laws through indiscriminate dumping of refuse on road medians.
The enforcement exercise was carried out on Sunday by LAWMA’s Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement, WISE, team. It was conducted in collaboration with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, KAI, OP MESA personnel and officers of the Nigeria Police.
According to LAWMA, the operation targeted business premises that repeatedly disposed of waste improperly despite sustained public sensitisation and repeated warnings by the state government.
The state government said it has intensified enforcement of environmental sanitation regulations in recent months to curb indiscriminate waste disposal, reduce flooding caused by blocked drainage and improve public health.
Residents and businesses have been repeatedly advised to patronise their assigned Private Sector Participant, PSP, waste operators and to comply with disposal regulations or risk sanctions, including the sealing of premises.
In a post on his official X account, LAWMA Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the operation covered Modele Street, Fagbile Street and Maja Street — areas where persistent violations have been recorded.
“Today, our @Lawma_gov WISE team, working alongside @LAGESCOfficial (KAI) officials, OP MESA military personnel and the Nigeria Police, is carrying out another round of enforcement operations along the Tejuosho-Ojuelegba corridor, with shops being sealed over the indiscriminate disposal of waste on the road median,” he wrote.
Gbadegesin added that the affected shops would remain sealed until owners meet required sanitation standards and comply fully with environmental laws.
“Our objective remains compliance, not punishment. We urge all businesses and residents to patronise their assigned PSP operators, keep their surroundings clean and dispose of waste responsibly. Together, we can build a cleaner, healthier and more liveable Lagos,” he said.
