The Lagos State Government has rolled out an extensive traffic diversion plan ahead of the 2026 edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon scheduled for Saturday, 14 February.
The state said the partial road closures and diversions are part of measures to ensure a smooth and incident-free race, which will feature both 42-kilometre and 10-kilometre categories.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the 42-kilometre race will commence at Ahmadu Bello Way (by MRS Gas Station) and run through the entire stretch of the Coastal Road, which serves as the finishing point.
Osiyemi noted that the 10-kilometre race will start at Durosimi Etti in Lekki Phase 1, passing through Ozumba Mbadiwe, Bishop Oluwole, Akin Adesola and terminate at Sanusi Fafunwa.
He explained that in line with the traffic management plan, all adjoining roads, junctions and intersections along both race routes will be blocked from 12.00am and 12.30pm on Saturday, adding that the roads will be reopened intermittently as the race progresses.
Osiyemi said the affected corridors will be manned by officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority and other security agencies to restrict unauthorised access to the race routes.
He reassured residents that traffic management officials will be strategically deployed across the city to assist motorists and minimise inconvenience.
The commissioner urged Lagosians to plan their movement ahead of time, use alternative routes and consider other modes of transportation during the marathon period.
He added that motorists are expected to cooperate with traffic officials and exercise patience, stressing that the temporary closures are necessary to guarantee the safety of participants and other road users during the 11th edition of the annual marathon.
